12 year old Nephew's birthday

Another day of slogging in the kitchen for my 12th year old nephew's birthday. My sister has asked me to make the cupcakes in the shape of 12 but blur like sotong me bought the wrong box. The board and box were just too small so if I wanna make the shape of 12, I can only use like 10 to 12 cupcakes. So I gave up and just winged it, below is the result of my non-planning. Next time, I have to really plan how I want the cupcakes to look like before I start doing anything! Anyway, made a total of 59 cupcakes (25 chocolate and 29 vanilla) today......am rather zonked out now........

Paddington House of Pancakes

I am a fan of pancakes, I think........or maybe not.......hmmm.......I cannot decide. Why? Well.......I love the fluffy texture of a pancake and especially if it couples with good butter and maple syrup......yum........the thing is, it will not be something on my mind when I think about what I wanna eat. It is not even on my craving list. I do enjoy eating it though so......am I a fan or not?

Anyway, went to the Paddington House of Pancakes at The Curve the other day with family because the boys wanted to eat. I can still remember the days when PHOP was in Centrepoint and a tiny shop, the pancakes were gorgeous! Now they have expanded to so many outlets and the menu is super extensive! I have to admit, every time when I go to PHOP, I get very confused. There are so many different types of pancakes with so many differnt toppings, how to choose?!? Nevertheless, we do try our best...........

This time, they have a set lunch offer. Actually, I donno when they started this since the last time I was in PHOP was damn long ago. Anyway, as I was saying, they have this set lunch offer which I thought was quite value for money. For RM13.90 (++ of course), you get a drink (coffee/tea/ice lemon tea/cannot remember), a main and sundae, quite good right?

the American Set

This is a pancake stack with chipolatas, chicken ham, cheddar and baked beans.

Classic Buckleberry Set

Buckleberry pancake with scrambled eggs, mushroom, cream cheese and beef bacon.

Honolulu Set

Dutch pannekoek with chicken ham, pineapple cubes, tomatoes, button mushroom and mozeralla cheese.

San Francisco Set

Pan fried dory with mashed potatoes served with rolled pannekeok.

Dollar Pancakes with dips

All the above are what we ordered for the mains in the set lunch, except for the dollar pancakes with dips. I donno if this is the usual standard but ALL those in the set lunch are rather tasteless and bland, which is not how I remembered PHOP to be! Maybe because they gave it at a cheaper price so no quality control? Why I said this because we ordered the dollar pancakes from ala carte and it was really nice and fluffy, unlike the ones in the sundae(soli, forgot to take picture again). So, sub standard food at cheaper price or better quality ones at a more premium price? It is up to you......

Soo Kee Ipoh Hor Fan Restaurant

My eldest sister is a HUGE fan of Soo Kee Ipoh Hor Fan in Sea Park. Everytime she comes back to KL, she HAS to go there for at least a meal or two; depending on the duration of her stay. So, as usual, she wanted to go there for her fix of Ipoh hor fan and I tagged along happily with her, my nephews and my mom.

yau kai (literal translation: oily chicken)

I think the steamed chicken aka yau kai here is the main reason why people come to this restaurant. The chicken is super smooth and coupled with their home made oyster sauce, aiyoh........heaven! The boys could not get enough of it!

plain mee

Ipoh hor fan

I have been to Soo Kee quite a number of times but I have never tried their noodles before. This time, the boys ordered a plate each and I finally got a chance to sample it. The noodles are quite fragnant, exactly how I like it for wan tan mee. But, again.....decisions decisions, as much as I love the noodles; I love the silky smooth hor fan too, how?!?! Oh, I have to say the portion of the hor fan has shrunk quite significantly this time round. I actually thought that I have imagined it.....you know......like maybe my appetitie has grown tremendously so the portion seemed so much smaller. But no, my sister agreed with me too so maybe..........I can have the ipoh hor fan AND then the noodles the next time. Hahaha...........talk about super greedy. =P

We have also ordered a bowl of wan tans. The wan tans here are quite delicious and you can actually tasted the individual prawn in each wan tan. It comes together with the soup that taste full of MSG but you just cannot help yourself and still finish everything, including the MSG-laden soup!

All in all, food here is fantastic but for a coffeeshop; it does not come cheap. We ordered a bowl of wan tans, one plate of chicken, three noodles, two hor fans and three drinks and it set us back about RM57......definitely not cheap for a coffeeshop.

Rakuzen Japanese Restaurant

I think one of the other reason that I have not been updating my blog was because my sister from UK was back and we were eating at home A LOT. So, other than me being busy with her when she was around; I hardly got the chance to eat out so what is there to blog about?

My friends and I were supposed to go Pudu for dinner once but due to our typical, horrendous KL traffic, we had decided to adjourn to Hartamas as it was more centralised for everyone to meet. Now......where to go for makan in Hartamas Shopping Centre? As I usually luvvvveeeee Japanese food, I suggested we go to Rakuzen. Tried calling them to make a booking and they were rather full so we were on waiting list (they are always jam packed!).

I was just thinking where we should go if we really cannot get a table. Luckily, they managed to squeeze us in. Now, like I said, I luvvvveeeeee Japanese food and I am usually at a loss when it comes to ordering because I wanna eat SO MANY things! =P Heh.....that is why Japanese Buffet is one of my favourites or if not, I will just order one of those bento set that has almost everything! =P Haha.....that is not true......bento set that has almost everything is also usually rather hard on the wallet so I will still order normal sets.

Cranky Salmon Roll

Friend ordered the Cranky Salmon Roll and Miso soup with clams for dinner (so healthy!). I think the salmon roll is really nice as the ebiko, salmon and the egg mayo taste just go so well together! Actually, there is something that is rather crispy inside the roll but I never really bother to find out what it is , I just think that it is excellent! Heh.....inquisitive is not one of my best attributes. =P

Yakiniku Beef Set

This time, I have decided to order the Yakiniku Beef Set. My set comes with the usual pickle appertiser, miso soup, chawamushi and fruits. The beef is rather tender and flavourful and I had to eat it REALLLLLLLY slowly so I can slowly savour it.

Sukiyaki Beef Set

Another friend ordered the udon with the Tempura prawns but I was so busy eating that I forgot to take a photo of it (so typical!). Er.......I did not try her dish so cannot comment on it. Sister ordered the Sukiyaki Beef Set. I have actually wanted to order this but since she was ordering it, I could order something else and steal from her. =D Er.....I think my sister really enjoyed it but in my mind was, "luckily I didn't order this!" I felt that the soup was rather tasteless and the beef was very tough. I do not know if this is the usual standard for sukiyaki in Rakuzen Hartamas but when I go for their Sunday buffet in Chulan Square, it is usually quite tasty. I guess I would have to try it again to confirm but only if someone else is ordering!

Cupcakes for my niece's full moon party

It was my baby niece's full moon and sister wanted to give cupcakes as favours for the party. So, together with two sisters from Jakarta and London who are here for a visit, we made a total of 125 cupcakes on the day itself. Have to say, it is A LOT of work. Furthermore, oven in my house kaput so had to lug EVERYTHING to my sister's place to make the cupcakes.....sigh.....somehow it seemed more work when you are not doing it in your own house.

Tamarind Hill @ Jalan Sultan Ismail

Have to say that I have been REALLY bad at keeping this blog. I have uploaded these pictures a long time ago but I really have no words. Longer I dragged, the more I loss I am for words......sigh......really donno how long I will keep this up. As I was telling my sisters, I am probably gonna relegate to just putting up the pictures, with just "good", "no good", "must try", "don't try".........will see......

I would like to elaborate on my visit to Tamarind Hill but it was so long ago that I really can't recall much except that the restaurant looks like a resort so it was a very nice environment to take your meals.

I think they offer a very good selection for set lunch but my friend wanted to have the ala carte so I did not get the chance to try, maybe next time as I thought the prices was quite reasonable for what they were offering in such a nice place.

The unique decor of the restaurant

I love the nice balinese outdoor area........as if I am in a resort

Tom Yum with prawn

All my friend wanted was this tom yum soup. I have to say it was rather delicious and not very spicy. I cannot take spicy food so this was more my cup of tea rather than the really spicy ones that are offered elsewhere. My only complaint.......it's too little! Three of us shared one bowl and I think I only have maximum three to four spoonfuls of it!

Stir Fried Broccoli

Minced Chicken with Basil

My aftermeal coffee with black sticky rice desserts

The broccoli was normal but the minced chicken with basil is quite tasty, fantastic with rice! Had the black sticky rice with mango for desserts but not very fantastic so I don't recommend it.

Ming Kee Bak Kut Teh, Old Town PJ

I usually go to Heng Kee for bkt as my friend loves to go there but my other friend prefers Ming Kee (apparently they are siblings). So, this time round......I went to Ming Kee with my friend. Over here, the bkt is not your usual claypot style. It comes in bowls with a herbal taste so if you like the herbal ones, you will definitely like this!

Bermuda & Onion

My friends have wanted to go B&O for desserts because as they proclaimed, "B&O has the best chocolate ice cream in town!" So, off we went.

Chocolate Fondant with ice cream

I do not know why this is called the chocolate fondant but it is absolutely delicious! The chocolate sauce just oozed out after you cut it.......yum........and the cake is soft and moist, perfect!

Banana Spilt

We ordered the banana spilt with ALL three scoops of chocolate ice cream. It was rather surprising that they actually allowed us to change all the flavours to just chocolate as some places just refused to. Anyway, I donno about the "Best chocolate ice cream in town" but the chocolate ice cream here is really good. It is rather bittersweet, something that I like. Come to think of it, the Haagen Dazs Belgian chocolate is quite similar to that too. Check it out and tell me what you think.

I have always wanted to come check out B&O since they opened but never really got the chance. I guess I will have to come back again to try out their mains.

Strawberry Cake

Tasted this some time ago at my friend's housewarming party so been wanting to make it myself. The strawberries smelled so good! I thought it was quite delicious. =P

Devilish DessertsParty

My friend had a "devilish desserts" party the other day so I decided to bake our super moist chocolate cake. The last few times I baked this, a lot of people has commented that I should have chocolate inbetween the cake. So, this time round, I slice the cake and pour some of the chocolate sauce on it (since we always have a lot leftover anyway). It definitely made a difference and no wastage!

Soo Kee's Son (Meng Chuan) Restaurant

Met up with a couple of friends in town for dinner the other night and was wondering where to go for cheap food. Friend decided to go Soo kee's Son in Imbi since we have not been there for a while. I thought it was a great idea because I have been craving for the beef hor fun over there for some time too. =P

Beef Hor Fun

The super smooth hor fun with tender pieces of beef added with the fragnant spring onions and ginger, this dish is fried to the perfection. I can never get enough of this!

Hokkien Fried Noodles

This is my first time ordering the hokkien fried noodles here. The taste is good with all the super size chu yau zak (fried pork lard).

Cantonese Fried Yee Mee with Prawns

We usually order the cantonese seafood fried ying yang but my friend wanted to have the yee mee with prawns so we ordered that instead. The taste is still good because it is the same egg sauce that is smooth and full of flavour. Still, I prefer the ying yang to the yee mee.

This place is famous for beef noodles and sang har mee but like everywhere else, the sang har mee is uber expensive. I have tried it a couple of times but I thought it was only okay (donno what's the hype about). But that's just me, apparently a LOT of people think it's damn good so be prepared to pay the price if you wanna try this dish.
