Meng Kee Char Siew

My friend and I love to come to Meng Kee in Tengkat Tong Shin for char siew. This place used to be packed by twelve in the afternoon and you usually have to wait for a little while to get a table, even if it is to "tupp toi" (share table). But this time round, even at 1pm, the place was not full. I have to say the standard here has dropped quite a bit. We ordered half lean, half fat for the char siew and it came ALL lean.....ewww......char siew so lean, where got nice???? Even the chicken looked a bit sad.......and this place used to be SOOOOO good......sigh.....wonder what happened to them. I guess I need to find a new place to have my "melt-in-the-mouth" char siew already.......

2am: Desserts Bar

Went down to Singapore last weekend for my nephew's concert. Hardly did anything or went anywhere at all.........was just mostly lazing around in my sister's place. Sigh.......have to say really auntie nowadays, so lazy to go out and just talked about baking and grocery shopping with my sister, auntie or not?

Anyway, was talking to my sister about the price of blueberries and it is SOOOOO much cheaper in Singapore. I thought I should get some and bring it back to Singapore so we went to the 24 hours Cold Storage in Holland Village (we were supposed to go for late night shopping in Orchard
but we were too lazy......sigh.....auntie, auntie.....). There were not a lot of car park spaces in Holland V so when we finally managed to get one (almost the last one available!), we decided to go somewhere for coffee and desserts.

My sis has heard about this new desserts bar opening in Holland V so we went to check it out. The bar was on the first floor of the shop house and it was rather dark from the outside so we were not sure if it was opened. Took a peek and it was actually packed with people! I was quite impressed when I first stepped into it because it looked so swanky! A bit pretentious but swanky nevertheless. =P The place has a few long tables and high chairs and if you REALLY wanna chill out, there is actually this long sofa bed where you can lie down. The sofa bed looked really comfy (sorry, no pix) but I was wearing a short dress that day so we opted to sit by the bar.

The long bar

Some bubbly on the shelf

On the menu, they actually give you recommendation on the wine to go with the various desserts. But, for a desserts place, I have to say the menu is quite limited. There is not really a lot of choices on desserts but then, that could also be due to the fact that they just opened. Maybe.......just maybe, I think, they will add more in the future? I donno.....just my opinion.

My Cafe Latte

Cappucino

I loved it when they can make the coffee looked so pretty!

D.S.S ($14)

My sister ordered this dessert, D.S.S. (Deconstructed Strawberry Shortcake) that comes with smoked white chocolate, wild strawberry panna cotta, pate de fruit, white chocolate rice krispies and rose petal sorbet. I thought the white chocolate was only ok and the strawberry panna cotta was quite fragnant and delicious. As for the rose petal sorbet, you can really taste or smell (I'm confused) the rose petal but not really my cup of tea. Presentation is quite french right? You know, huge plate but the portion is just a tiny bit.

Twix ($13)

I decided to order the Twix as I saw caramel mousse, peanut crumble and valrhona chocolate ice cream on the list! The mousse was only so-so but at least the peanut crumble could bring a little more taste into the mouse. The ice cream was quite rich but full of the valrhona flavour so that was the satisfying bit of the dessert.

All in all, I think the desserts here have nothing to shout about but will be a good place to go hang out and chill. It actually gets kinda crowded comes 11pm to 12am so will be good for you to go earlier if you want a place on the sofa bed.

Lemon Poppyseed Muffins

I have been out of commission for more than a week on my blog!! *tsk*tsk* Sorry, just that I have been away so have not really gotten the chance to update my blog. Furthermore, internet in my house is out so it was even more difficult to go online. Anyway, I have wanted to make these muffins for the longest time ever but never got around to actually buy the poppyseeds to make them. I know the icing looks a bit sad but was actually rushing to "drizzle" them on before going out. Luckily the taste was okay as compared to the looks! =P

Extra Super Tanker Chinese Restaurant

It was my mum's birthday on sunday and we were scratching our heads on where to go for celebration. Then my sister decided to book Extra Super Tanker at Damansara Kim. I have only been there once and that was a long time ago.....

Crispy Skin of the Peking Duck

Sis has pre-ordered the Peking Duck here so it was a good surprise for me (as if it's my birthday *LOL*) because like I said before, I LOVE Peking Duck. =P I love it when the servers bring the duck out and slowly cut the skin in front of us but over here, due to the tight space and crowded tables; they actually cut in the kitchen first before serving it to us on a plate. Somehow, that did not feel as exciting........but, what to do? As usual, the skin is excellent coupled with the thin slices of popiah skin....yum.....just the thought of it is making me salivate again..........=P

Sang Choy Pau

Sang Choy Pau is usually cooked with minced meat but over here, they used crab meat instead. Taste is quite light and at RM30 a plate, it is quite a good bargain because there is quite a lot of crab meat in there. Hmmm......maybe more worth it than to just order crabs (the one with shells), the only setback is, you can only have it this style(no chilli, marmite or salted eggs). =P

Mixed Vegs with Tofu

The tofu is really soft and smooth and the sauce is full of flavour, fantastic with rice!

Herbal Pork Ribs with Pig's Stomache

In the specials whiteboard outside the restaurant, we saw a dish called "sun kei tou guat"; literally meaning "Amazing stomache bone". My dad and I were rather intrigued with it so decided to order it. Turned out to be exactly like herbal chicken except it is with pig's stomache and pork ribs. I thought the dish was rather delicious but at RM50 a pot, it is a little pricey for just ribs and stomache. Still, another good dish to go with the white, fragnant, steamed rice.

Sou Mien

All Peking Duck dishes come with another dish of your choice using the meat. This time, we have ordered the sou mien (birthday noodles) since it is for our mother's birthday. The noodles were really tasty and springy but we thought the duck meat was a little dry. We feel that there is a lot more meat than noodles as there was not enough noodles to go around. Hmmm......but it could also be due to the fact that we liked the noodles more than the duck meat itself so maybe we actually ate more noodles.......I donno........

Salted Egg Squid

Before the noodles came, sis and I felt that we were still hungry and there were not enough food so decided to order the salted egg squid. Talk about greedy........squid actually came after the noodles and we were rather stuffed by then. Luckily, the squid was rather crispy and tasty so we could still managed to stuff it down our throats even though we felt like we were gonna explode any time soon (greedy, greedy, greedy......).

Chocolate Cake with Cheese Frosting

Bought a cake from Just Heavenly for the candle blowing. I had originally wanted to bake but really had no time so had to spend some moolah. Heh.......I guess we were not really gonna explode after the squid since we could STILL eat the cake. *blush* Chocolate cake was really moist and the cheese did not overpower the cake, quite a good combination!

Zipangu Japanese Restaurant, Shangri-la Hotel

The chefs at work at the open kitchen

Table setting

Went to Zipangu for a friend's birthday the other day. The last time I went, it was about two years ago. I was quite happy to come back as I remembered food here is really good albeit expensive.

My friend wanted to find out what is included in the "Chef Recommendation" set dinner as it was not written in the menu at all. Waiter was not that helpful as well, in fact, he seemed a little blur. He just went, "Er....got sushi and sashimi." Anyway, she decided to take the plunge and ordered the set without knowing what is being served. So, I can tell you, every dish that was being served is a like a surprise to us and sometimes we don't even really know what we were putting into our mouths. =P

Appertiser
First was the appertiser. There was the seaweed cold soup, something new that I am trying. Quite refreshing. The salad is good too but I am not exactly a fan of the feta cheese.

Unagi roll

Heh.....I have to stuff this whole baby into my mouth at one go. The taste of the unagi, avocado, tamago, cucumber and rice exploded all at once in the mouth......ah......ecstasy!

The Glorious Sashimi Platter

This is absolutely my favourite!!! The sashimi is super fresh and I love it when the fish just melts in the mouth!

Our veggies for the night

Er....other than the snow peas, we have no idea what we were eating but it was really delicious!

Mixed Tempura

Next was the mixed tempura prawns and vegetables. It was very light and crispy, unlike some places where you feel like they have been cooked in oil that has been overused for a gazillion times, if you know what I mean......

Fish. What fish? I have absolutely no idea

Beef steak

Cha soba

Sushi Selection

Miso soup with clams

Delectable desserts

I think I am just gonna be rather repetitive with my poor selection of words and poor attempts at photography......added the fact that I am feeling super lazy, do not think I am gonna continue this blog for the night. All I am gonna say is, food is excellent but do be prepared to pay some $$!!

Cagayan's Filipino Restaurant, Centrepoint

I have a Filipino maid at home but I don't think that I have ever tried Filipino food.....no, hold on.....maybe I did when I was in Manila 13 years ago......gosh....it's been so long, I have no idea. Anyway, wanted to buy lunch for a friend as it was her birthday and she decided to come here as she was craving for the soup. She is a regular here and has been raving about this place to me but I have never really gotten the chance to check it out until now....

Looking at the menu, I did not think that it looked very Filipino as there is a lot of western dishes. But then, like I said, what do I know about Filipino cuisine?

Golden Mushroom Bacon maki

The menu comes with pictures so when I first saw this.......heh.......I knew I had to try this. You could never go quite wrong with pork bacon dishes. =P

Pork Belly Soup

This is the dish that my friend has been craving for. It is a broth that is cooked with seafood/chicken/pork belly. You can choose whichever and we obviously chose the pork belly. =P When I first tasted it, it immediately reminded me of the chinese "hum choy tong" (salted vegetable soup) but there is no "hum choy" in there. A bit sourish, a bit spicy, super tasty......really brings out the appetitie in you!

Pork Ribs

I have actually uploaded another picture but it has somehow disappeared.....oh well.......not that it was a great picture anyway. As usual, we tried to include some greens in our diet so we ordered the Filipino vegetable dish called Pinakbet. It is sauted kang kong, pumpkin, okra, egg plant, bittergourd and long beans in shrimp sauce. I have to say this is really not my cup of tea but then, I am not a big fan of shrimp sauce so that could be it. But according to my friend, this is not as tasty as before so who knows?

I have been craving for pork ribs for a long time so when I saw it was in the menu, I cannot help but order it. Meat was so tender that it falls right off the skin! They have different sauces for you to choose and I opted for the Classic one. I thought it tasted okay but my friend did not really like it. Well.....everyone has different taste buds right? The coleslaw that came with it was only so-so but the mashed potato........yuck! I don't know if the potatoes has gone bad or what but it tasted horrible!

I guess I will definitely go back again but just for the soup and bacon maki. =P

Butter cake

A friend of mine likes to eat Butter Cake so I decided to try it out. Not bad for a first attempt but I guess next time gotta be a little bit more hardworking in lining the tin rather than just stuffing the baking paper into the tin. =P

Restoran Perlama Seafood

Friend took me to this seafood restaurant in Klang.......wah.......talk about godforsaken place. If you ask me how to get there, I probably cannot answer you. I only know that it is at the North Port and it is near the jetty. The place is rather simple but packed with lots of people! It has quite a number of fans all over the restaurant so was rather nice and cool.

Huge pot of seafood porridge

absolutely delicious and fragnant

This place is famous for bak kut teh and seafood but by the time we got there, the bak kut teh was all sold out so I did not the chance to try it. Apparently you can call and order it so they can hold the bkt for you. We thought we could make it early enough without calling to book but apparently not......

Had ordered a small seafood porridge with prawns, fish and squid but turned out to be rather big serving (Only RM20 for such a huge pot). This is not the usual thick cantonese style porridge but more of the hokkien version where the porridge is a little bit thinnner. Heh.....it was really delicious so we walloped the whole pot! =P

Kai Lan Miew (RM8)

Our attempt at the fibre intake, turned out to be quite a good choice as the taste was just right.

Steamed egg with prawns

Steamed Pomfret Teochew Style

The prawns (RM24) and pomfret (RM30) was super fresh and cooked just right! You can really tell how fresh it is by the sweetness of it. I would really love to try the other dishes as well but there were only two of us and there is only so much that we can eat (which I know is a lot from the photos but still......).

Cheap, yummy and fresh........definitely need to come back again. Hopefully the next time we go there, there will be more people joining so we can order and try the other dishes.

Vietnam Kitchen

The Vietnamese hats on one wall

The modern decor of the restaurant

I think the best Vietnamese food that I have ever tasted is in Australia (other than in Vietnam itself). It is a cuisine that I regularly go for during my studies in Perth. But since coming back to KL, Vietnamese is not really at the top of my "to eat list" as I feel that it is not as good here. Still......I will still go for it once in a blue moon.

Vietnamese Prawn Roll

The prawn rolls were nice with sweet sauce but can't taste the prawns though.

Vietnamese beef noodles

Er.......I only tasted the soup so I cannot comment much. It is good but I feel that it is not fragnant enough for a good broth. Still, for Malaysian standards (for Vietnamese food), this is good enough!

Vermicelli with pork balls and spring roll

Usually when people go for Vietnamese, they will just order the beef noodles or the pork chop with broken rice. Not a lot of people will take notice or try the cold vermicelli. This is actually quite delicious with the sweet chilli sauce drizzled over it. With the mint leaves, lettuce, lemongrass and chilli, the taste is rather refreshing!

Filtered Drip Coffee

I absolutely LOVES the Vietnamese drip coffee. The flavour is very strong and with the added condensed milk, the bittersweetness of it puts me on a high........

Canton Fare Restaurant

The Chinese Decor

Bird Cages

I have heard about Canton Fare for quite some time but never really got the chance to come and try this place until my friend suggested to come here for dinner. Place was rather crowded when we got there but luckily there was ONE table empty. If not, then we have to think about where to go again and we HATE deciding where to go for makan........you know, so much good food around, how to decide????

Succulent Peking Duck

Beautiful Omelette wrapped around the crispy skin with spring oions

More crispy skin on prawn crackers

Canton Fare was running a promo of Peking Duck (RM48++, usual price is RM68++) and I LOVVVVEEEE Peking Duck! Ooooooo.........the crispy skin of the duck dipped in sweet hoisin sauce and wrapped with the omelette skin.............yummmmm..........

The drumsticks of the Peking Duck

Sang Choi Pau

As you all know, when you order Peking Duck; you get another dish of your choice with the meat. You can have it fried with noodles, rice, on its own and.....er.......actually I donno what else. We ordered the Sang Choi Pau, which basically is the meat cut into cubes, fried and then you wrapped it with lettuce. I did not think the chef did a very a good job with this because it was rather dry. Oh ya, we made them chop out the drumsticks of the duck which turned out to be a pretty good idea. Firstly, like I said, the fried dish turned out to be quite dry. Secondly, we realised that we actually get more meat out of the duck this way. Heh.....talk about kiasu......=P

Lotus Roots fried with Assorted Nuts and Vegetable

We ordered the Lotus Roots fried with Assorted Nuts and Vegetable for our choice of fibre instead of the usual greens. I thought it looked rather sad when the dish arrived and I was feeling a little bit suspicious about it. True enough, the dish was dry and tasted a bit bland. Think the nuts were a bit stale too. Sigh.....bad choice......

Twin mix

I loved the char siew that they served, a bit fatty but it is just bursting with flavor! As for the siew yoke, the skin is very crispy but I thought it was too fatty for my taste. Hmmmm......sounds a bit contradicting right? Char siew is a bit fatty but I love it and siew yoke is too fatty? I thought it was a bit strange too...........maybe I am more biased towards char siew?
